Joe Ellis
The founder of Georgia Tornado Shelters, Joe has lived in Georgia almost all his life. After two details in the Air Force and a brief career in finance Joe began building houses in his spare time in 1969. He fell in love with the work, and in 1974 quit his day job to start a development company with his brother. In 1989 he brought his son, Rick, into the business. Joe eventually retired from building houses in 1998 to care for a sick family member. But, he continued to exercise his craftsmanship, and in 2008, facing a grim housing market, he decided to apply his skills in a way that would more clearly benefit the community. Joe firmly believes in a policy of "paying it forward", and sees shelters as a way of protecting Georgians before they're in need.
